Course Description

The Master’s Program in Public Health at the Faculty of Public Health,

Diponegoro University, based on the 2020 curriculum

 

1. Compulsory Courses for the Master’s Program in Public Health:
In Semester I, the program includes the following courses: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Philosophy of Science and Research Methodology, Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Global Health, Leadership & Systems Thinking, and Social and Behavioral Science.In Semesters II, III, and IV, the program includes courses such as Proposal (thesis), Publication of Scientific Articles, Thesis Result Examination, and Thesis Examination.
Topics covered in these courses include:
1.Biostatistics: Concepts and theories of applied statistics in health, both descriptive and analytical biostatistics, and their application in public health.
2.Epidemiology: Concepts and theories related to the epidemiological triangle (host, agent, and environment), epidemiological methods, surveillance, and application of epidemiological methods in health programs and services.
3.Philosophy of Science and Research Methodology: Basics of philosophy of science, ontology, axiology, epistemology in science and public health. Research methodology covers quantitative and qualitative research methods, including research design, instrument development, population, sample size, data collection techniques, data analysis, and research report writing.
4.Social and Behavioral Science, Leadership, and Systems Thinking: Theories and concepts of behavioral science relevant to health, health management, health policy, and health promotion. Concepts and theories of leadership, leadership types and styles, systems thinking in health.
5.Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Safety, and Global Health: Theories and concepts of environmental health, environmental disease management, occupational health and safety basics (health and safety in the workplace, patient safety, and occupational safety management). Also, study global health situations, global warming, climate change, disasters, greenhouse effect, population, communicable and non-communicable diseases, reemerging diseases, neglected communicable diseases, pandemics, and a comparison of health systems in several countries.
6.Proposal Thesis: How to identify thesis problems, develop research background, formulate problems, objectives, research benefits, research authenticity, literature review, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, research type, population and sample, operational definitions, data collection and analysis methods.
7.Scientific Publication: Students must publish two scientific articles based on their thesis in international scientific journals or nationally accredited journals (SINTA 4 to SINTA 1).
8.Thesis: Students conduct research (data collection) according to the disseminated proposal, perform data analysis, write the thesis results, and defend it in the thesis result examination and thesis examination.

2. Concentration: HEALTH ADMINISTRATION AND POLICY (HAP)
Compulsory courses for the HAP concentration include: Health Ethics and Law, Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy, Strategic Health Planning, Quality Management, Human Resources and Health Logistics, and Economics and Financial Management of Health.Topics covered in these courses include:
1.Health Ethics and Law: Studying health ethics concepts, theories, and their application in health. Health law and regulations: concepts, theories, and their application in health policy, health services, and health programs.
2.Organization and Health Management: Studying theories and concepts of organization and management and their application in health organizations, various subfields of health management, and current issues in health management.
3.Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy: Studying concepts and theories of public policy, health policy analysis: policy formulation, stakeholder health policy interests, health policy implementation, and evaluation, communication and advocacy theory, and its application in health policy.
4.Strategic Health Planning: Studying the formulation of visions, missions, and objectives of health organizations, internal and external organization analysis, SWOT and Balanced Score Card, implementation of strategic planning (plan of action), monitoring and evaluation of strategic plans in health institutions.
5.Human Resources Management, Quality, and Health Logistics: Studying the human resources management cycle in health organizations, from planning, utilization to monitoring/supervision, and retirement preparation with various main aspects. The course also covers the theory and concept of health service quality, efforts to improve the quality of health services, and evaluation programs to maintain the quality of health services. Additionally, logistics/infrastructure management in health service organizations, including planning, procurement, use, supervision, and evaluation.
6.Economics and Financial Management of Health: Studying the application of economic theory and methods to health organizations/health programs, cost concepts and theories, analysis of program/health facility costs, concepts and theories of insurance/health guarantees, the relationship between participant-insurance body/health guarantee and the health facility network, the development of health insurance in Indonesia, and the implementation of the National Health Insurance (JKN) policy and the role of the Health BPJS. Applying the theory and functions of management in the finance and budgeting of health organizations, both government and private.

3. Concentration: HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION (HA)
Compulsory courses for the HA concentration include: Organization and Hospital Management, Hospital Management Information Systems, Hospital Economics and Financing, Human Resources Management, and Nursing in Hospitals, Strategic Management and Marketing of Hospitals, Hospital Logistics Management and Hospital Design, Quality and Hospital Risk Management, and Field Work Practice (PKL) for fresh graduate students or those who have never worked in hospitals.
Topics covered in these courses include:
1.Organization and Hospital Management: Studying concepts and theories of hospital organization, the application of management functions in hospitals (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling), resource management in hospitals, and current hospital management issues.
2.Hospital Economics and Financing: Studying the application of economic concepts/methods to hospitals, health technology assessment for hospitals, hospital financing: cost analysis, hospital tariffs, cost containment, insurance/health guarantees (including National Health Insurance/NHI and BPJS Health) and its impact on hospital business and services. Also, learning the basics of hospital financial management: hospital revenue and expenditures, how to manage finances in hospital businesses, and recording and reporting hospital finances.
3.Human Resources Management and Nursing in Hospitals: Studying the application of management functions to human resources in hospitals (planning, recruitment, selection, human resource utilization, and specific aspects of human resource management in hospitals), and the application of management functions to nursing human resources in hospitals.
4.Strategic Management and Hospital Marketing: Studying the formulation of visions, missions, objectives, internal and external hospital analysis, corporate and hospital business strategic formulation, implementation of strategic planning (plan of action), and monitoring its implementation. Also, studying marketing theories, marketing mix, consumer behavior, and methods and techniques for marketing hospital services.
5.Hospital Logistics Management and Hospital Design: Studying the application of management functions to hospital logistics: drugs, other pharmaceutical preparations, food, and linen, as well as supporting installations in other hospitals. Additionally, learning the basics of designing hospital buildings according to technical norms (construction and architecture) and hospital K3.
6.Quality and Hospital Risk Management: Studying the theory and concept of hospital service quality, efforts to achieve hospital service quality, also studying the concept of clinical risk in hospital services and how to manage clinical risk in hospital services.
7.Field Work Practice (PKL) in Hospitals: This course is non-credit and is specifically for fresh graduate students, with a duration of 1.5 months. It is mandatory for students who have never worked in a hospital. Students choose one hospital as the location for PKL. In addition to working at the chosen hospital, students also identify problems, solve hospital management problems, write PKL reports, and present PKL results.

4. Concentration: HEALTH MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS (HMIS)
Compulsory courses for the HMIS concentration include: Health Management Information Systems, Health Data Management, Database Management, Health Information System Analysis and Design, Health Information System Audit, and Health Information System Project Management.
Topics covered in these courses include:
1.Health Management Information Systems: Studying the concepts and functions of management information systems, health management information systems, case studies of various information system problems in health and non-health institutions.
2.Database Management: Studying data modeling in the health field, as well as applying databases in the environment of existing database management systems on the market, extracting information using query language, multi-platform data conversion, data protection and recovery, and management of the database system used to support data security.
3.Health Data Management: Studying the management of health data (primary and secondary) using data management software. Data management activities include data collection, data processing, data analysis, and data presentation. Data analysis is carried out with a descriptive and inferential statistical approach.
4.Health Information System Analysis and Design: Studying the analysis and design of the development of an information system, workflow analysis, creating/developing a prototype case, system flowchart (DAD), creating a data dictionary, identifying hardware and software needs.
5.Health Information System Audit: Concepts of Health Information Systems, Information System Evaluation (IS) with various frameworks, Health IS Audit, IS Audit professional ethics, IS security.
6.Health Information System Project Management: Studying the functions within health information system projects, the scope of health information system project management, and its relationship with other functions and activities in the information system. Analyzing important factors in managing health information system projects, demonstrating health information system project management, and developing project management techniques for health information systems.

5. Concentration: MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH (MCH)
Compulsory courses for the MCH concentration include: Health Nutrition for Mothers and Children, Surveillance of Maternal and Child Health, Reproductive Health and Family Planning, Child and Adolescent Health, Communication – Information – Education, and Community Empowerment, Quality Management of Maternal and Child Health Programs, and Current Issues in Maternal and Child Health.
Topics covered in these courses include:
1.Health Nutrition for Mothers and Children: Studying the basic theory of Nutrition Science, measurement of nutritional status, nutrition of infants, toddlers, and adolescents, nutrition of pregnant women, nutrition programs to overcome micro and macro nutritional problems.
2.Surveillance of Maternal and Child Health: Studying surveillance theory and concepts in maternal and child health: surveillance methods, data and interpretation, and follow-up surveillance.
3.Child and Adolescent Health: Studying the concepts and theories of child toddler health, school-aged children, and adolescents, their health problems, causes, and efforts to overcome them.
4.Reproductive Health and Family Planning: Studying the concepts and theories of human reproduction, reproductive organs and their diseases, reproductive health problems and how to overcome them, contraceptive devices, family planning concepts and problems of population, family planning policies and programs, as well as the work program of the National Population and Family Planning Body.
5.Communication – Information – Education (CIE) and Community Empowerment: Studying the concepts and theories of CIE and community empowerment, determining success factors, problems, and the application of CIE and community empowerment in MCH programs.
6.Management Program and Surveillance of MCH: Studying the basics of MCH policy and its implementation in the form of MCH programs, applying management functions in implementing MCH programs, problems, and efforts to overcome them.
7.Current Issues in Maternal and Child Health: Studying various current issues and maternal and child health problems in Indonesia, starting from problem identification, causes of problems, and how to overcome them.

6. Concentration: COMMUNITY HEALTH NUTRITION (CHN)
Compulsory courses for the CHN concentration include: Health Nutrition for Mothers and Children, Community Health Nutrition and Disease Prevention, Reproductive Health Nutrition, Food Security and Food Resilience, Communication – Information – Education (CIE) and Community Empowerment, Program Management Community Health Nutrition, and Current Issues in Community Health Nutrition.
Topics covered in these courses include:
1.Health Nutrition for Mothers and Children: Studying the theory and concept of mother and child nutrition, especially infants and toddlers, the nutritional status of babies/toddlers, problems, causes, and efforts to overcome them.
2.Community Health Nutrition and Disease Prevention: Studying the theory and concept of community nutrition in relation to disease prevention, efforts that must be made for disease prevention from a nutritional aspect, problems, and their causes.
3.Reproductive Health Nutrition: Studying the theory and concept of human reproduction, reproductive organs and their diseases, problems of reproductive health and how to overcome them, the role of nutrition in overcoming reproductive health problems.
4.Food Security and Food Resilience: Studying the theory and concept of food security, determining factors, food security problems, and efforts to improve food security in the community.
5.Communication – Information – Education (CIE) and Community Empowerment: This course focuses on the theories and concepts of Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) and community empowerment. It explores the determinants of success, challenges, and the application of CIE and community empowerment in public health nutrition programs.
6.Program Management for Community Health Nutrition: This course covers the functions of management (planning, implementation, and evaluation) in community nutrition programs. It addresses issues related to program management and strategies to overcome challenges.
7.Current Issues in Community Health Nutrition: This course explores various current issues in community nutrition at both national and global levels. It includes mapping and identifying the distribution of problems, their causes, and efforts to mitigate these issues.
